Suriname, officially the Republic of Suriname, is located in northern South America. It lies in between French Guyana to the east and Guyana to the west.

Both countries are accessible by paved road. The southern border is shared with Brazil and the northern border is the Atlantic Ocean.

With a land area of 164.000 km² (100 km² = 38,61 sq. miles) it is the smallest country in South America.

Paramaribo, the capital of Suriname, lies on the Suriname River, approximately 15 km inland from the Atlantic Ocean.

Its unique traditional architecture is on the Unesco World Heritage list.
